What is Flash Memory?
Flash Memory is a type of memory technology that can be used to create primary or secondary storage. Commonly used to make ROM and SSDs.
What are 4 properties of Flash Memory?
Non-volatile
Short lifetime
Fast access
Robust
Explain what is meant by non-volatile.
Flash memory is non-volatile. This means it will keep its contents once power is switched off.
Explain what is meant by ‘Short Lifetime’.
Flash memory can only be re-written a certain number of times before it starts to degrade.
We may lose access to the drive once flash memory has degraded past a certain point.
Explain what is meant by ‘robust’.
Not easily damaged by shocks.
Flash memory is appropriate in scenarios where it might be exposed to lots of vibrations.
Give two examples of machines in which flash memory is appropriate.
Industrial machinery
Vehicles
Where does flash memory store its data?
In a semi-conductor chip.
