Emergency treatment of acute anaphylaxis frm allergic reactions

Epinephrine Autoinjector Counseling Pts

• Inject into the anterolateral aspect of thigh (not into buttock, digits, hands, or feet)

• Legs should be held firmly during injection

• Seek medical assistance (even if patient feels better after use)

• Should not be used IV ← autoinjector for IM/SUBQ admin

Pregabalin Indications

1. Neuropathic pain (diabetes, spinal cord injury associated) 2. Fibromyalgia Seizures (focal/partial) onset 4. Postherpetic neuralgia

Pregabalin Regulatory Status

Pregabalin Counseling Pts

• Must be used within 45d of first opening bottle

• Avoid activities that need mental alertness/coordination

• Avoid sudden discontinuation of drug (withdrawal, increased seizure frq)

• Avoid alcohol (any use of CNS depressants)

Divalproex Indications

1. Seizure (simple/complexe absence seizure)

2. Complex, partial epileptic seizure

3. Bipolar

4. Migraine

Divalproex Counseling Pts

• Avoid activities needing mental alertness

• May cause dizziness, drowsiness

• Seek attention if signs of liver dysfunction during 1st 6 mo of therapy

• Take with food

• Do not abruptly discontinue drug

• Avoid alcohol

• Can sprinkle capsule onto soft food (no chewing)

Gabapentin Indications

1. Partial seizure

2. Postherpetic neuralgia

Gabapentin Counseling Pts

• 1st dose on Day 1 → take @ bedtime

• ER formulation → take w/ dinner

• Avoid activities needing mental alertness/coordination (cause dizziness, drowsiness)

• Wait 2 h after antacid b4 taking medication

• Report worsening depression, suicidal ideation, changes of behavior

• Do not abruptly discontinue drug

Lamotrigine Indications

1. Bipolar

2. Seizure (partial, adjunct, tonic-clonic)

Lamotrigine Counseling Pts

• Seek medical attention if blistering, rash, yellowing of skin/eyes, unusual bruising/bleeding, shortness of breath.

• Slow titration to minimize side effects

• Avoid alcohol

• Oral disintegrating tablet → take on tongue, allow dissolve

Levetiracetam Indications

1. Seizure (myoclonic, partial, tonic-clonic)

• Swallow extended-release tablet whole (do not chew, break, crush)

• Avoid sudden discontinuation of drug

• Avoid activities requiring alertness, coordination

• Report signs of mood swings, agitation, suicidal ideation

Levothyroxine Indications

1. Hypothyroidism

2. Thyroid-stimulating hormone suppression

Levothyroxine Counseling Pts

• May take 6-8k to see improvement of symptoms

• Avoid abrupt discontin.

• Take on empty stomach, with water at least 30 min before food

• Avoid antacids & iron within 4 h of dose

Alendronate Indications

1. Osteoporosis (prevention, fracture risk reduction)

2. Paget disease

3. Glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis

Alendronate Counseling Pts

• Do not lie down for at least 30 min after taking medicine and until after you have eaten food

• Swallow non-effervescent tablet with water (240mL)

• Dissolve effervescent tablet in water 120mL room temp (not mineral/flavored)

• Wait more than 5 min and stir solution for 10s and drink when effervescence stops

• Swallow tablet before drinking/eating/taking other medicines, sit upright

Cyclobenzaprine Indications

Skeletal muscle spasms

Cyclobenzaprine Counseling Pts

• Avoid activities requiring mental alertness/coordination (may cause dizziness/sedative effects)

• Take extended-release capsule same time every day
