Staffing
The managerial function of filling and keeping filled the positions in the organization structure.
Selection
The process of choosing from among the pool of prospective job candidates developed at the stage of recruitment.
Placement
Refers to employees occupying the position or post for which the person has been selected.
Orientation
Introducing the selected employee to the other employees and familiarizing him with the rules and policies of the organization.
Training
The process by which the attitude, skills, and abilities of employees to perform specific jobs are inculcated.
Development
Learning opportunities designed to help the employees to grow.
Performance Appraisal
Evaluating an employee's current or past performance as against certain predetermined standards.
Promotion and Career Planning
Addressing career-related issues and promotional avenues for employees to encourage them to grow and realize their full potential.
Compensation
All forms of pay or rewards going to employees, which may be in the form of direct financial payments (wages, salaries, incentives, commissions, bonuses) or indirect payments (employer paid insurance, vacations).
Transfers
An internal source of recruitment involving horizontal shifting of an employee to another job, department, or shift without significant change in responsibilities and status.
Promotions
An internal source of recruitment involving vertical shifting of an employee to a higher position carrying higher responsibilities, facilities, status, and pay.
Direct Recruitment
An external source of recruitment where a notice is placed on the notice-board specifying details of vacant unskilled or semi-skilled jobs.
Casual Workers / Badli Workers
Unskilled or semi-skilled workers hired through direct recruitment to fill temporary or casual vacancies.
Casual Callers
An external source of recruitment utilizing a database of unsolicited job applicants kept in business offices to fill vacancies as they arise.
Employment Exchange
Government-run exchanges that serve as a link between job-seekers and employers to match personnel demand and supply for unskilled and skilled operative jobs.
Placement Agencies
Private agencies and professional bodies that compile bio-data of candidates and provide nationwide services matching personnel demand and supply for a fee.
Management Consultants
Firms that specialize in middle-level and top-level executive placements and help recruit technical, professional, and managerial personnel.
Campus Recruitment
Recruitment practice where big organizations maintain close liaison with educational institutions like universities, vocational schools, and management institutes to recruit qualified personnel.
Labour Contractors
Contractors who maintain close contacts with labourers and can provide the required number of unskilled workers at short notice.
Web Publishing
External recruitment through websites specifically designed and dedicated to providing information for job seekers and job providers, such as www.naukri.com.
Trade Tests
Selection tests that measure the existing skills, level of knowledge, and proficiency of an individual in their profession or technical area.
Interest Tests
Selection tests used to know the pattern of interests or fascination of a person for a job.
Employment Interview
A formal, in-depth conversation conducted to evaluate the applicant's suitability for the job.
Medical Examination
A physical fitness test required for a candidate after the selection decision and before the job offer is made.
Job Offer
A letter of appointment or confirmation given to candidates who passed selection hurdles, containing a date by which the appointee must report on duty.
Contract of Employment
A document executed by the employer and candidate after job offer acceptance detailing job title, duties, responsibilities, working hours, leave rules, and termination conditions.
Apprenticeship Programmes
A training programme where trainees work under the guidance of a master worker for a prescribed period to acquire higher skill levels.
Internship Training
A joint training programme where educational institutions and business firms cooperate, allowing candidates to carry on regular studies while working in a factory or office.
Vestibule Training
Off-the-job training conducted away from the actual work floor in a classroom environment created to duplicate actual equipment, files, and materials.
Induction Training
Training given to help a new employee settle down quickly into the job by becoming familiar with people, surroundings, the job, and the business.
