Difference between Marxism and Neo-Marxism
Traditional Marxism argues that religion is a conservative and oppressive force, Neo-Marxism considers that religion may have a dual character, sometimes creating inequality and sometimes creating positive social change
Maduro views
Religion can be a revolutionary force that brings about positive social change
Maduro study
The Catholic clergy in Latin America created means of education for WC people (literacy programs, campaigns etc.), to make them aware of their oppression. They believed that serving the poor was a key part of Christianity
Bloch views
The principle of hope - Our dreams of a better life that contain images of a utopia, but can deceive us. These images can spur us on to create positive social change
Billings study
Compared class struggle in 2 catholic communities, one of coal miners and one of textile workers in Kentucky in the 1920’s and 30’s. The miners were more resistant to their oppression due to encouragement from their religion. The textile workers accepted the status quo and were obedient to capitalism
Dual character
Religion can both maintain capitalism and legitimise inequalities, and also be a source of positive social change. E.g. Martin Luther King used christianity to bring people together
Liberation theology
Movement in the Catholic Church in Latin America, a commitment to the poor in opposition to military dictatorships, which was deepening rural poverty.
Criticism of Neo-Marxist perspective
How come so many RC people are religious and are more likely to attend church?
Even in communistic societies e.g. Cuba, religion still exists
