A futuristic universe where oppressive societal control is maintained through various means like corporate, technological, or totalitarian control.
Utopia
An ideally perfect place or state concerning politics, laws, customs, and conditions, unlike dystopia.
Characteristics of Dystopian Society
Key features include propaganda, restricted information, worship of a figurehead, surveillance, fear of the outside world, dehumanization, banishment of the natural world, uniform conformity, and an illusion of a perfect society.
Corporate Control
Society controlled by large companies like in "Minority Report."
Bureaucratic Control
Mindless bureaucracy control as seen in "V for Vendetta" or "1984."
Technological Control
Control by computers or robots as in "Terminator" or "The Matrix."
Philosophical/Religious Control
Control through ideology enforced by dictatorship as in "Delirium" or "Divergent."
Characteristics of the Dystopian Protagonist
Traits include feeling trapped, questioning social systems, sensing something wrong with society, and helping others see the negatives of the dystopian world.
