impulse
the product of the average net force on an object and the time interval over which the force acts.
momentum
the product of the object's mass and the object's velocity; measured in kg times m/s.
impulse-momentum theory (theorem)
states that the impulse on an object equals the object's final momentum minus the object's initial momentum.
closed system
a system that does not gain or lose mass.
isolated system
a closed system on which the net external force is zero.
law of conservation of momentum
states that the momentum of any closed, isolated system does not change.
inelastic collisions
objects stick together in collision.
elastic collisions
when the energy between two objects repel from each other.
explosions
an object breaking into many pieces.
