Papillary layer
upper layer/ outer layer of dermis. thin. dermal papillae. intertwine with epidermis. enhances surface area to exchange nutrients and waste.
Reticular Layer
deeper layer of dermis. thicker than papillary. has dense connective tissue. collagen fibers. elastic. provides strength and elasticity.
Sebaceous Gland
small gland. produces oily substance. sebum. helps lubricate. waterproofer. waterproofs skin and hair.
Arrector Pili Muscle
small muscle. attached to hair follicles. contracts and gives goosebumps.
Hair Follicle
structure where hair grows from. inside dermis. surrounded by connective tissue. purpose is hair development and regeneration.
Hair Shaft
hair that extends outside skin surface. has keratinized cells. protects hair follicle. contributes to hair structure.
Hair Root
part of hair that is below the surface of skin. inside of the hair follicle. purpose is to anchor the hair. it’s surrounded by dermal tissue.
Sudoriferous Gland (Eccrine)
A gland in the skin that produces sweat, plays a key role in regulating body temperature and excreting waste. white in color. all over body. mainly in soles and palms and forehead.
Pacinian Corpuscle
mechanoreceptor. located in dermis. detects deep pressure and vibration. main role is sensory. perception. of touch.
Meissner’s Corpuscle
mechanoreceptor. in the upper dermis. detects light touch and vibration. crucial to sensory perception of fine textures.
