Seed Grading

The process of sorting seeds based on their quality and physical characteristics such as size, weight, color, and purity.

Germination

The process of a seed sprouting and growing into a seedling, representing the first and most important stage of plant growth.

Germination Test

A test that determines how many seeds out of a batch will sprout and grow into healthy seedlings.

Percent Germination

A measurement calculated by taking the number of sprouted seeds, dividing by the total number of seeds tested, and multiplying by 100 ($\text{Percent Germination} = \frac{\text{Sprouted Seeds}}{\text{Total Seeds Tested}} \times 100$).

Physical Purity

The removal of unwanted materials from seeds—such as other crop seeds, dirt, broken seeds, stones, and plant debris—to keep only clean, whole seeds of the correct variety.

Moisture Content

The level of moisture in seeds; incorrect levels can cause seeds to rot if too wet or fail to germinate if too dry.

Moisture Meter

A simple tool used by farmers to check and measure the moisture level of seeds.

Floating Test

A method to check seed quality by placing seeds in water; good quality seeds sink to the bottom while poor or hollow seeds float to the surface.

Seed Coating

A process where seeds are coated with fertilizers or fungicides to boost germination and protect against soil diseases.

Fungicide Treatment

A chemical treatment applied to seeds to prevent mold and fungal infections during storage and early growth.

Fertilizer Coating

A chemical treatment that adds nutrients directly to the seed to support a healthy start.

Portling and Bagging

The final step in seed grading where seeds are packed in clean, sealed containers, kept dry, protected from pests, and properly labeled with seed type, date, and grade.

Performance Standards

Defined expected actions, timing, and quality benchmarks that must be followed when testing and grading seeds to ensure high quality before planting or sale.

Growing Media

Clean and nutrient-rich material—such as soil, compost, or cocopeat—used to support seed germination and seedling growth.
