valence electrons
Electrons on the outermost energy level of an atom.
atom
The basic unit of a chemical element.
molecule
A group of atoms bonded together.
compound
A substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds.
mixture
A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined.
chemical formula
Shows the elements in the compound and the ratio of atoms.
coefficient
A number in front of a chemical formula in an equation that indicates how many molecules you have.
subscript
A number in a chemical formula that comes after the element symbol and tells the number of atoms of the element in a molecule.
ionic bond
A chemical bond resulting from the attraction between oppositely charged ions.
cation
A positively charged ion.
anion
A negatively charged ion.
covalent bond
A chemical bond formed when two atoms share electrons.
