Geography
The study of people, places, and processes, focusing on their connections.
Physical Geography
The study of patterns of climates, landforms, natural vegetation, soil, and water.
Human Geography
Focuses on how people change Earth's surface, including urban planning, transportation, and tourism.
Deforestation
Cutting down trees and not replanting them.
Geographical Thinking
Analyzing the world from multiple perspectives, such as logically, historically, emotionally, and geographically.
Absolute Location
Exact location using latitude and longitude.
Relative Location
Description of a location in relation to another.
Interrelationships
Connections between living things and the environment.
Demography
Study of Population.
Spatial Significance
Understanding why certain areas are populated or significant.
Geographic Perspective
Analyzing social, environmental, economic, and political implications.
Reference Maps
Shows political boundaries and the general location of features such as cities, buildings, and roads.
Thematic Maps
Maps that focus on a single topic or a theme.
Topographic Maps
Provide details of small areas on Earth’s surface using symbols and contour lines to show elevation.
Large-Scale Map
Shows small area in large amounts of data.
Small-Scale Map
Shows large area in small amounts of data.
Compass
An item used for finding direction through the four cardinal points: North, East, South, West.
Latitude
A set of imaginary lines that measure distance in degrees north or south of the Equator.
Longitude
Measures east or west from the Prime Meridian.
GPS (Global Positioning System)
A constellation/group of 24 satellites that orbit the Earth, enabling anyone to know their absolute location.
GIS (Global Information System)
A computer/digital software that layers maps and information/data.
Canadian Identity
Includes what Canadians think and believe about themselves and their country of Canada.
Patriotism
A feeling an individual associates with the importance of their country.
Diversity
Differences in racial and ethnic, socioeconomic, geographic, and academic/professional backgrounds.
Multiculturalism
Affirms the equality of all Canadians.
Mosaic
People retain their original unique cultures and identities, acceptance of diversity.
Issue
A complex problem that requires a solution.
F.O.C.U.S
A method to gather Facts, form an Opinion, consider Choices, determine Urgency, and find a Solution to an issue.
