Visual Acuity
The requirement of at least 20/40 in each eye to qualify for a Maryland driver's license.
Field of Vision
The continuous visual range which must be at least 140 degrees to meet Maryland's licensing requirements.
Knowledge Test
A 25 question test with a 20 minute time limit that checks for understanding of motor vehicle laws, safe driving practices, and traffic signs.
Rookie Driver/Graduated Driver Licensing System (GLS)
The multi-stage process for new drivers of all ages to gain experience before graduating to a full Driver's License.
Type 1 Learner's Instructional Permit
A permit issued to individuals who have never held a noncommercial driver's license, lasting up to 2 years.
Supervising Driver
An individual at least 21 years old with a license for at least 3 years who must accompany a learner's permit holder in the front seat.
Provisional Driver’s License
A license issued to new drivers that allows unsupervised driving with specific restrictions for at least 18 months.
Emancipation
A court decision that a minor is no longer under their parents' control, allowing them to co-sign an application without a parent or guardian.
Developmental Disability Disclosure Card
A voluntary blue card the size of a driver's license that provides details about a disability and communication preferences for law enforcement.
Defensive Driving
The practice of searching ahead and being ready to change speed or lanes to identify risks and avoid crashes.
Yielding the Right-of-Way
Letting other vehicles, bicyclists, or pedestrians move ahead of you or cross the road before you proceed.
Speed Limit
The maximum legal speed you can travel on a road under ideal (perfect) conditions.
Following Distance
The recommended gap between vehicles, which should be a minimum of 3 to 4 seconds under ideal driving conditions.
Unobstructed
A road condition where there are no median strips, signs, or other barriers in the way.
Steady Yellow Signal
A traffic light indicating that the signal is changing from green to red, providing time for vehicles in the intersection to clear safely.
Flashing Red Signal
A signal that requires a complete stop at the stop line before yielding to all other traffic and proceeding when clear.
Lane Use Signals
Overhead signals that indicate which direction a reversible lane may be used depending on traffic flow.
Diamond Shape Sign
A yellow sign shape that warns of special conditions or hazards ahead.
Pennant Shape Sign
A sign shape that marks the start of a no-passing zone.
No-Zones
The four large blind spots around trucks and buses where other vehicles disappear from the driver's view.
Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC)
The measurement of alcohol in the blood; Maryland considers drivers over the influence at a level of .08 or higher.
Open Alcohol Container
Any open can, bottle, or package of alcohol located in the passenger area, which is illegal while driving.
Distracted Driving
The act of taking eyes, hands, or focus away from the task of driving, often involving cell phones or eating.
Hydroplaning
A condition where tires lose contact with the road and ride on a sheet of water, potentially causing loss of control.
Work Zone
A specific road area marked by orange signs where construction, maintenance, or utility work is active.
Move Over Law
Maryland law requiring drivers to change lanes or slow down when approaching stopped vehicles with flashing lights.
Implied Consent
The agreement that by driving on Maryland roads, you consent to drug or alcohol testing if requested by law enforcement.
