Main Verbs
The most important verbs in a sentence that describe actions or states, or link a subject to a description.
Auxiliary Verbs
Verbs used with main verbs to modify their meaning, frequently used to form different tenses.
The auxiliary verb "do"
Used to make questions and negatives of statements that don't already have an auxiliary verb.
Modal Verbs
Verbs that modify the meaning of the main verb to express various notions such as possibility or obligation.
Linking Verbs
Verbs that express a state of being or becoming and link a subject to a complement.
Subject Complement
A word or phrase that renames or describes the subject, linked by a linking verb.
Transitive Verbs
Verbs that take an object, which is a noun or phrase that receives the action of the verb.
Intransitive Verbs
Verbs that never take an object.
Direct Object
In a sentence with two objects, this is what the verb refers to.
Indirect Object
In a sentence with two objects, this is the entity that benefits from the action.
