Moods Disorders: Highs and Lows
Moods disorders involve extreme in emotions and motivation, namely DEPRESSION and MANIA
Bipolar includes an episode of both
Depression vs Mania
Extreme Moods:
Depression: Low self worth, sad, unmotivated
Mania: Elevated, impulsive, and energized
Having episodes of both = BIPOLAR DISORDER
Depression
Depression makes everyday tasks seem extremely difficult and challenging to INITIATE them or get started
Problems
Poor decision making, poor motivation, worthlessness, guilt, isolate, negative attitude, low energy, inability to focus on daily routines
Mania
Exaggerated self-esteem and difficult FINISHING task (NO PROBLEM STARTING THEM!)
Problems:
Poor Judgement, attention seeking, impulsive, irritable, hyper sexuality, sleep difficulties, inflated, high energy
Bipolar
Bipolar disorder involves maniac and depressive episodes
Bipolar I leans towards MANIA
Bipolar II leans towards DEPRESSION
Both kinds require at least one episode of mania & depression

Activities: Concrete, tangible, short-term, simple
Grade for successful completition
Re-establish normal routines
Social skills and interpersonal psychotherapy (role-play, couching)
Movement and mindfulness activities
We can help them build Self-worth
CBT
Reality testing (focus on the right now)
Depression Interventions- Simplified
Do something SIMPLE enough that they SUCEED at it
Do something EXPRESSIVE (psychotherapy)
Help the challenge their bad ASSUMPTIONS (CBT)
Depression-Suicide Awareness
Signs a client is suicidal- GET HELP INMMEDIATELY!
Acquiring something lethal (ex: stocking pill medication, buying a gun)
Making a will or taking out life insurance
Giving away belongings
Seeking caretaker for pets/ children (If anything happens to me)
Passive suicidal behavior (ex: not eating)
Mania Interventions
Interventions have to be organized & structured
Introduce Order & structured
Activities: Concrete, tangible, short, success enhancing, structured and simple
A few materials, 3 steps or less
Redirect attention, limit distractions
Provide clear expectations and set limits
Only present what is necessary for the activity
Movement is ideal
AVOID REALITY CHECKING AND SHOW EMPATY !

Bipolar Disorder Intervention
We address whichever they are dealing with currently : Depression or Mania
Depression Medications- Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)
Some foods can interact BAD w/ medication
AVOID aged cheese, wine, beer, yogurt, tea, coffee, avocados, bananas, soy sauce, pickled herring, yeast, protein extract, raising, dates and other foods
What to look for in answers:
Food preparation activities should educate on FOODS TO AVOID
Give a list of FORBIDDEN FOODS from a physician, nurse, or clinical dietician
Have client prepare a simple meat and CHEESE sandwich (WRONG ANSWER)
