UK

Sudan

1. A drone struck a funeral in a city in North Kordofan.

2. About 40 people were killed.

3. The military-ruled Sudanese government blamed the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

4. The army also accused the RSF of carrying out the attack.

5. This happened amid an escalating civil war.

6. The RSF has recently seized territory, including El-Fasher.

7. They’ve been accused of looting, war crimes, sexual violence, and contributing to famine.

Colombia

1. Colombia stopped buying U.S. weapons, breaking long-standing military cooperation.

2. The U.S. placed sanctions on President Gustavo Petro over alleged failures against drug cartels.

3. The U.S. revoked Petro’s visa after his pro-Palestinian protest speech in New York.

4. Petro condemned U.S. naval strikes on drug-smuggling boats as “murder” and a violation of sovereignty.

5. He responded by suspending intelligence sharing with the U.S. until the strikes end.

6. Colombia had long been a key U.S. ally in the “war on drugs,” especially under Plan Colombia.

7. These actions mark a major shift from cooperation to confrontation between the two countries.

Maldives

1. Maldivian government is implementing new taxes on tourists (hotels, ferry rides and attractions)

2. A tax increase of about US $0.75 (or equivalent) applied to certain tourist activities

3. Goal is to raise around US $100 million annually to fund climate-change mitigation and environmental projects

4. Because the Maldives has a tropical monsoon climate, it is particularly vulnerable to climate impacts (such as sea-level rise, coastal erosion, storm surges), making this location especially important for environmental protection.
