APICAL
Top/free surface of epithelial tissue.
STRATIFIED
Epithelium arranged in multiple layers.
BASEMENT MEMBRANE
Bottom side of epithelial tissue.
MACROPHAGE
Immune cell associated with getting rid of unwanted material, debris, or cells.
GROUND SUBSTANCE
Material that fills the spaces between connective-tissue cells and fibers.
INTERCALATED DISCS
Structures that connect cardiac muscle cells.
FIBROBLAST
Connective-tissue cell that makes/secretes fibers.
FIBERS
Protein components of connective tissue.
LOOSE CONNECTIVE TISSUE
Connective tissue with loosely arranged cells and fibers.
DENSE CONNECTIVE TISSUE
Connective tissue with densely packed fibers.
ADIPOSE TISSUE
Tissue dominated by fat-storing adipocytes.
ADIPOCYTE
Fat-storing cell.
TRIGLYCERIDE
Stored fat/energy molecule from your guide.
LACUNA
Small cavity where an osteocyte sits.
CANALICULI
Tiny channels in compact bone.
Simple squamous
Thin, one layer structure that allows rapid exchange.
Simple cuboidal / columnar
Tissue with more cytoplasm that functions in absorption and secretion.
Stratified squamous
Tissue with many layers providing protection against abrasion.
Connective tissue
Extracellular matrix and fibers that support, bind, cushion, and resist force.
Adipose
Large lipid-filled adipocytes functioning in energy storage and cushioning.
Blood
Fluid plasma matrix for transport of cells and dissolved substances.
Cartilage
Firm, flexible matrix providing support while tolerating compression.
Bone
Mineralized matrix arranged in osteons providing strong support and protection.
Skeletal muscle
Long, striated contractile fibers that allow forceful voluntary movement.
Smooth muscle
Tapered, unstriated cells providing involuntary contraction in internal structures.
Cardiac muscle
Branched, striated cells with intercalated discs for coordinated heart contraction.
Neuron
Cell where dendrites receive signals and the axon carries signals away for directional communication.
