What is ramp rate
Must be monitored and controlled throughout the cure process, too fast/too slow diminishes the exchange of volatiles out of the laminate and interrupts the movement of resin into low pressure sites
Pre preg
Composite materials in which a reinforcement fiber is pre impregnated with a thermoplastic or thermoset resin matrix in a certain ratio
Unidirectional fiber
Fibers go all in one direction, not woven, held together by small threads, not traces
Thermoplastics
Rely on heat to melt or allow the resin to in order to process, can be reheated and remolded
Thermoset
Two or more components that when mixed and properly cured form a solid, cannot be remolded
Routes of exposure
Absorption, inhalation, injection, ingestion
Absorption
Cuts or cracks, organic solvents, gloves, all on skin
Inhalation
Breathing a substance into lungs, different respirators have different rated filters
Injections
Introduces foreign matters into the blood stream or tissue
Ingestion
Swallowing chemicals, left on face, or ate through food
Respirable
Fibers whose shape and size allows for them to be potentially inhaled and penetrate deep into the lungs
Ceiling limit
Maximum allowable level for life, hard stop
Excursion limit
Can be exceeded by a specified amount of time (has to be below ceiling limit and TWA)
Threshold limit value
Degree of exposure to contamination which most people can work consistently for 8 hours a day, day after day, with no harmful effects
Resin mix ratio practice this (mix ratio 100:10) 340 gram batch
100+10=110
100/110=0.909
10/110=0.0909
340 *.91=309.4 resin weight
340*0.09=30.6 hardener weight
Etch and Aldine process
Uses scotch brite on the metal part, scuf up until you can’t see a reflection, clean the part in watch, then put in the etch bucket, then clean with water, then put in alodine, then remove and air dry the part.
what do we need high of to bond metal to metal
surface free energy
scheduling
the order of layers on composite make up
cure time
duration for a full cure to set
what is glass transition temperature
from rigid to more rubber flexible state
warp direction
longitudinal yarns in a roll of woven fabric, runs the length of the roll
fill direction
run 90 degrees to the warp yarns / across the roll of fabric
selvage
stitched or looped edge that runs along both sides and along the length of a roll of woven fabric.
warp clock
determines the orientation of fibers in a composite fabric layer
Co bonidng
two or more elements are cured together, with at least one element having been fully cured previously, and one being uncured
co curing
curing laminate simultaneously bonding it to some other uncured structure
secondary bonding
two or more pre cured or already cured composite parts join together by adhesive bonding
what is the schedule for a composite
vacuum port
bag film
other half of vacuum port
breather
caul plates
release film
peel ply
perforated film
cfrp panels
thermocouples
peel ply
solid release fil
sealant tape
caul plate
what type of fastener is good for composites
stainless steel and titanium
drilling for carbon and glass fiber reinforced composites
diamond coated carbide
drilling aramid fiber reinforced composites
brad point twist drill
inserts
potted inserts provide capability to attach components and sub assemblies to sandwich structures
bushing n drill guides
Clockwise (CW)
engineering point of view
Counter Clock Wise (CCW
manufacturing point of view
what does selvage precent
from fabric raveling
Nesting
yarn direction at the interface is the same for each ply at that interface
tracers
id the warp and fill direction, runs at 90 deg along the length
