  • lots of sectional tensions brought an end to the era of good feelings

  • John Quincy Adams is favored in New England

  • John C. Calhoun competed with William Crawford for southern support

  • Henry Clay hoped for support from the eastern manufacturers and western farmers

  • The fifth candidate was Andrew Jackson who quickly gained popularity

Political Democratization

  • The process through which a political regime becomes democratic.

  • Began in the west, one state after the other abolished the requirement that voters own property.

  • Written ballots replaced the custom of voting aloud, which enabled elites to influence their subordinates at the polls.

  • Formerly appointive offices became elective

  • The electoral college survived, but the choice of presidential electors by state gave way to direct election by the voters

John Quincy Adams

  • 6th president

  • Formerly belonged to the Republican party of Thomas Jefferson, but later became a leading Whig

  • Accused by Jackson of stealing victory of the presidency through a “corrupt bargain” which significantly hurt his presidency

  • New England’s favorite in the election of 1824

  • Won election- elected henry clay as sec. of state

  • His guiding principle of his presidency was improvement on both the social and personal level.

  • He thought the American republic was the culmination of human progress and he intended to further progress through a broad-gauged program for American development.

  • Looked to improve public education, expand communications and commerce and launch an ambitious program of federal internal improvements

  • Wanted America to participate in the first Pan-American conference to promote commerce

  • Created by Van Buren when he was governor

  • Was composed mainly of men like himself

  • this group emerged in the early 19th century in New York and had strong influence/control of the state’s government

  • This played a big role in the election of 1824 as he had a great sense of how political winds would blow.

  • Republican party was splintering, and the country needed an opposing party to allow a strong competition and a clear winner to be revealed.
