Who created the Hitler Myth?
Joseph Goebbels
Why was the Hitler Myth created?
Encouraging people to view Hitler as Germany’s saviour was crucial in ensuring support.
Many people remained sceptical of Hitler when he took power.
It was vital that people had absolute trust in Hitler since the system concentrated power in Hitler’s hands (in theory) and had an ideology that emphasised obedience and unity.
What was the Hitler Myth?
The portrayal of Hitler as both an ordinary man and a superhuman/heroic figure.
He was utterly and solely devoted to the service of his country.
His uncompromising iron will lay at the root of his political genius.
It was his sacred, personal duty and mission to solve all of Germany’s problems.
What functions did the Hitler Myth serve?
It satisfied people’s emotional need for strong government.
Contrasted Hitler’s selflessness with the corrupt Weimar politicians.
Promised unity and stability as opposed to the divisions and instability of the Weimar democracy.
Allowed the Nazis to claim that Hitler’s personal legitimacy as the Leader rested not only in the office of chancellor, but also on the will of the people.
It gave real credibility to the principle of authoritarian leadership by identifying Hitler as the sole protector of the German nation.
This explains how he was able to offer a legal justification for his actions on the Night of the Long Knives.
Why didn’t most Germans didn’t see through the myth?
They were so desperate for a strong leader who would convey their interests, especially due to the German tradition of an authoritarian leadership. They were desperate to recover from the failings of Weimar.
