what is a lipid
biomolecule
soluble in organic solvents
insoluble in water
what are hydrolyzable lipids?
waxes, triglycerides, and phospholipids
what are unhydrolyzable lipids?
steroids and fat-soluble vitamins
what is saturated fatty acids?
have no double bonds in their hydrocarbon chains
what is unsaturated fatty acids?
have 1 or more double bonds (generally cis)in their long hydrocarbon chains
describe the relationship the number of double bonds and the melting point
as the number of double bonds increase, the melting point decrease
what is the kink
the change of direction in the molecular strucutre
what are waxes?
esters formed from a fatty acid and a high molecular weight alcohol
what is the ester formation for waxes?
fatty acid + alcohol = ester + h2o
what are triglycerides?
triesters formed from glycerol and 3 molecules of fatty acids (can be the same or different)
why does unsaturated lipids have a low melting point and makes it diffuclt to stay in a solid state?
because of the kink
what does cis mean?
naturally occuring
what does trans mean
unnatural, made in a lab
what do steroids look like
a group of lipids whose carbon skeletons contains several closed rings
what is the classification of vitamins?
water and fat soluble
what are the 4 fat soluble vitamins?
A, D, E, and K (ADEK)
