Checklist for accurate BP:
1. the patient should avoid caffeine, exercise, and smoking for at least 30 min before, also make sure patient has emptied bladder
2. use validated device
3. use correct cuff size
4. arm should supported at heart level
5. have the patient relax, sitting in chair (feet on floor, legs uncrossed, back supported) for more than 5 min of rest
6. neither patient nor clinician should talk and the patient should not be on there phone
7. temp controlled room
8. take 2 readings at least 1 min apart, average them, and provide both verbally and in writing
Normal BP
Systolic: less than 120
and
Diastolic: less than 80
Elevated BP
Systolic: 120-129
and
Diastolic: less than 80
High Blood Pressure (Hypertension) Stage 1
Systolic: 130-139
or
Diastolic: 80-89
High blood pressure (hypertension) stage 2
Systolic: 140 or higher
or
Diastolic: 90 or higher
hypertensive crisis (consult dr immediately)
Systolic: higher than 180
and/or
Diastolic: higher than 120
