Glyc-
Prefix meaning sugar.
-lysis
Suffix meaning break down.
Glycolysis
The step in cellular respiration taking place in the cytoplasm where glucose is transformed into pyruvic acid, releasing energy as glucose bonds are broken.
ATP Net Yield of Glycolysis
Glycolysis uses 2ATP and produces 4ATP, resulting in a net gain of 2ATP.
NAD+
An electron carrier in glycolysis that accepts 2 electrons (e−) and H+ to form NADH.
Anaerobic Nature of Glycolysis
Glycolysis does not require oxygen and takes place in the cytoplasm.
Krebs Cycle
A process occurring in the mitochondria matrix that requires oxygen and breaks down pyruvic acid from glycolysis into CO2 while releasing energy.
Citric Acid Cycle
Another name for the Krebs Cycle, named because citric acid is formed and broken down during the cycle.
Location of the Krebs Cycle
Occurs in the mitochondria matrix.
Outputs of the Krebs Cycle
Produces CO2, 2ATP, NADH, and 2FADH2.
Role of NADH and FADH2 in Cellular Respiration
Molecules produced in glycolysis and the Krebs Cycle that pass high-energy electrons to the ETC (Electron Transport Chain).
