Chemistry
The study of matter and its composition, properties, interactions, and combinations.
Matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space (volume).
States of Matter
The three forms that matter can take: solid, liquid, and gas.
Atom
The basic unit of matter.
Air
Considered matter, as it has mass and occupies space.
Pure Substance
Matter with a definite composition and specific chemical properties.
Mixture
Different types of substances in the same container that can be separated and are not all bonded.
Molecule
Two or more atoms chemically bonded together.
Compound
Two or more different elements chemically bonded together.
Physical Property
A characteristic that can be observed or measured without changing the identity of the matter.
Chemical Property
A characteristic of matter observed as it changes to a different type of matter during a reaction.
Physical Change
Matter changes form or appearance but not its chemical composition.
Chemical Change
A reaction that creates new products with new compositions.
Periodic Table of Elements
A tabular arrangement of elements grouped by similar properties.
Metals
Elements characterized by high conductivity, malleability, ductility, and metallic luster.
Nonmetals
Elements that are typically poor conductors of heat and electricity and vary in state of matter at room temperature.
Homogeneous Mixture
A mixture that has a uniform composition throughout.
Heterogeneous Mixture
A mixture where the individual substances remain distinct.
Element Symbol
One or two letter representation of an element, where no number means there is ONE of that element bonded.
Chemical Formula
A way to represent the types and numbers of atoms in a molecule.
