Figures of Speech
Expressions used to make writing creative and expressive.
Simile
A comparison using "like" or "as".
Metaphor
A direct comparison where one thing is described as another.
Personification
Giving human qualities to something nonhuman.
Hyperbole
An extreme exaggeration used for emphasis.
Synecdoche
A device where a part represents the whole or vice versa.
Metonymy
Using a related word to represent something else.
Oxymoron
Two contradictory words placed together.
Paradox
A statement that seems contradictory but may be true.
Sound
The result of the creative combination of words, using techniques such as alliteration, assonance, rhyme, repetition, and anaphora.
Rhythm
That pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a poem.
Iambic
A rhythmic syllable pattern consisting of unstressed followed by stressed syllables.
