permeability definition

refers to ease with which molecules can cross the biological molecule. ONLY SELECTIVE SUBSTANCES.

Hydrophobic can pass.

Hydrophilic need carrier protein

2

Temperature

  • increasing temperature increases kinetic energy of phospholipids.

  • move more so become more fluid and loses structure.

  • Reduces barrier effect so polar molecules can pass and enzymes denature.

Solvents

Solvents dissolve membranes.

Non polar alcohols (ethanol/benzene) are less polar than H2O. can enter and wedge between phospholipids and disrupt membrane structure.

LEAKY AND MORE PERMEABLE.

Why do we use soap and alcohol based hand sanitizer?

Alcohol is non polar so can insert and disrupt cell membrane of pathogens. Alcohol also denatures proteins.
