erythrocyte

red blood cells that carry oxygen from the lungs to the body’s tissues and carry CO2 from the body’s tissues back to lungs

neutrophil

phagocytize bacteria

basophil

secrete histamine (a vasodilator) which increases blood flow to a tissue; secrete heparin which is an anti-coagulant and promotes the mobility of other WBCs by preventing clotting

eosinophil

increase in numbers because of parasitic infections, allergies, and some diseases

monocyte

differentiate into macrophages; phagocytize pathogens and debris of dead cells; present antigens to activate other cells of the immune system

lymphocyte

destroy cancer cells, cells infected with viruses and foreign cells; coordinate actions of other immune cells; secrete antibodies; serve in immune memory
