Supervising Driver Requirements
Must be at least 21 years old, possess a valid New Jersey driver license, and have been licensed for a minimum of 3 years.
Probationary License (Under 21)
May drive unsupervised after passing a road test and completing 6 months of supervised driving without suspensions.
Special Learner’s Permit Eligibility
Must be at least 16 years old, enrolled in a behind-the-wheel driver education course or commercial driving course, and the permit must be purchased by an approved instructor.
GDL Permit — Drivers 21 and Older
Are not restricted by any driving hour limitations.
GDL Violation Penalty
A fine of 100 dollars for violations of GDL permit or probationary license conditions.
GDL (Under 21) Restricted Driving Hours
Permitted to drive only between 5:01 am and 11:00 pm.
Probationary Driver Period
Length of time a driver is considered probationary after receiving their license, which is 1 year.
Road Test Checklist
Must present a valid vehicle registration, a valid permit, and a valid insurance ID card.
GDL Passenger Restrictions (Under 21)
Limited to dependents and one additional person, unless accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Altered Driver’s License Penalties
Fine up to 1,000, up to 6 months imprisonment, and loss of driving privilege.
Special Learner’s Permit Driving Hours
Driver is prohibited from driving between 11:01 pm and 5:00 am.
Prohibited Electronic Usage
Hand-held electronic devices, video games, or cell phones are not permitted while driving for probationary license holders.

Headlight Usage Rule
Must be used between one-half hour after sunset and one-half hour before sunrise, and during bad weather when visibility is less than 500 feet.
Entering a Curve
The best method is to slow down before entering, as the vehicle tends to keep going straight.
School Bus (at School) Passing Rule
You may pass at a speed of no more than 10 mph from either direction when a bus is stopped at a school to pick up or let off children.
Passing on the Right
Allowed on roads with more than one lane going the same direction or when the motorist ahead is turning left and there is room.
New Jersey Standard Speed Limit
The limit in business, residential, or school zones is 25 mph, unless otherwise posted.
Fire Hydrant Parking Distance
You may not park within 10 feet of one.
Left Turn Hand Signal
Hand and arm are extended straight out.
Right Turn Hand Signal
Hand and arm are extended upward.
Slow or Stop Hand Signal
Hand and arm are extended downward.
Right on Red Law
Permitted after a full stop and checking traffic, unless a ‘no turn on red’ sign is present.
Acceleration Lane
An extra lane at a highway entrance.
Deceleration Lane
An extra lane at a highway exit.
Expressway Exit Error
If you miss your exit, you should go to the next exit.
Stop Sign Parking Distance
You may not park within 50 feet of one.
Hand-Held Wireless Telephone Law
Motorists may not use hand-held wireless phones while driving except for fire, traffic accidents, or medical emergencies.
4-way Stop Rule
You must yield to the driver on the right if you arrive at the same time.
Uncontrolled Intersection Approach
Reduce speed and be ready to stop.
Backing in a Straight Line
Turn head and body to the right (looking over right shoulder) until you see clearly through the back window without using mirrors.
Studded Snow Tire Dates

Shift to neutral, keep eyes on the road, and steer the vehicle off the roadway.
City Driving Distance Rule
Look at least 12 seconds ahead.
Skidding Recovery
Take foot off the gas pedal and turn the vehicle in the same direction the rear is skidding.
Impairment After Drinking
Alcohol begins to impair reaction time, coordination, balance, and judgment after 2 to 4 drinks.
BAC Accident Risk (0.05%)
The risk of causing an accident doubles at this blood alcohol concentration level.
BAC Accident Risk (0.10%)
The risk of causing an accident is six times as great at this blood alcohol concentration level.

Space kept around the vehicle to provide time to react to occurrences.

A method used at any speed to help maintain a safe following distance.
