Musical Alphabet
The sequence of notes in music: A, B, C, D, E, F, G.
Staccato
A style of playing where notes are played in a detached, separated manner.
Legato
A style of playing where notes are played smoothly and connected.
Fortissimo (FF)
A dynamic marking indicating to play very loudly.
Piano (P)
A dynamic marking indicating to play softly.
Diminuedo
A musical term meaning to gradually get softer.
Marcato
A style of playing where notes are emphasized or played with strong accents.
Ritardando
A gradual slowing down of tempo in music.
Flat
A symbol indicating that the note it precedes is to be lowered by a half step.
Measure
A segment of time defined by a given number of beats, indicated in sheet music.
PPP
Pianississimo, which indicates to play extremely softly.
Molto
An Italian term meaning 'very' used to indicate an increase in intensity.
Beats in Music
Basic time units in music, often grouped in measures.
Total Duration
The sum of note values in a measure that must equate to a specified length, like 4 beats.
Stacatissimo
An even more separated style than staccato, indicating extreme detachment between notes.
