What are the two cerebral hemispheres?
Right and left hemispheres
What separates the right and left cerebral hemispheres?
Longitudinal Cerebral Fissure
What is located inside each cerebral hemisphere?
Lateral Ventricle
What is located outside each cerebral hemisphere?
Cerebral Cortex
Name the three types of white matter fibers.
Projection fibres, Association fibres, Commissural fibres (Corpus Callosum)
What are gyri?
Ridges on the surface of the cerebrum
What are sulci?
Grooves on the surface of the cerebrum
Name the four lobes of the brain.
Frontal, Parietal, Temporal, Occipital
What sulcus separates the frontal and parietal lobes?
Central sulcus
What sulcus separates the parietal and occipital lobes?
Parieto-occipital sulcus
What fissure is located on the lateral side of the brain?
Lateral fissure
What is the genu of the corpus callosum?
The front part of the corpus callosum
What is the splenium of the corpus callosum?
The back part of the corpus callosum
What is the fornix?
A band of white matter from the hippocampus to the hypothalamus
What is the septum pellucidum?
A membrane separating the anterior horns of the lateral ventricles.
How many layers are there in the neocortex?
Six layers
What is the outermost layer of the cerebral cortex?
Molecular layer
Name a distinct feature about the molecular layer.
It contains no neurons
Name the layer of the neocortex that contains densely packed stellate cells and small pyramidal cells.
External granular layer
Name the layer of the neocortex that contains loosely packed stellate cells and medium pyramidal cells.
External pyramidal layer
Name the layer of the neocortex that contains densely packed stellate cells only.
Internal granular layer
Name the layer of the neocortex that contains only large pyramidal cells.
Internal pyramidal layer
What are the Giant Pyramidal cells of Betz?
Large pyramidal cells
Name the layer of the neocortex that contains multiple sized pyramidal cells and loosely packed stellate cells.
Multiform layer
Name a function of the cerebral cortex.
Primary sensory area
Name a function of the cerebral cortex.
Visual area (Primary and secondary)
Name a function of the cerebral cortex.
Auditory area
Name a function of the cerebral cortex.
Taste area
Name a function of the cerebral cortex.
Primary motor area
Name a function of the cerebral cortex.
Pre-motor area
