Transverse Plane
Divides the body into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) parts.
Frontal Plane
Divides the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) parts.
Sagittal Plane
Divides the body into left and right parts; midsagittal divides into equal halves.
Superior
Towards the head or upper part of a structure.
Inferior
Away from the head or toward the lower part of a structure.
Deep
Away from the surface of the body; internal.
Superficial
Near the surface of the body; external.
Proximal
Closer to the point of attachment or origin.
Distal
Farther from the point of attachment or origin.
Ventral
Toward the front of the body.
Dorsal
Toward the back of the body.
Erect Position
Standing upright, facing forward, arms at the sides, palms facing forward.
Supine Position
Lying face up.
Recumbent Position
Lying down (can be prone or supine).
Prone Position
Lying face down.
