Body Planes: These are imaginary flat surfaces that divide the body.

The three planes are:

Transverse (axial): Divides the body into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) parts.

Frontal (coronal): Divides the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) parts.

Sagittal: Divides the body into left and right parts. A midsagittal plane divides the body into equal left and right halves.

Relational Directions: These terms describe the position of one body part relative to another:

Superior (cranial): Towards the head or upper part of a structure.

Inferior (caudal): Away from the head or toward the lower part of a structure.

Deep: Away from the surface of the body; internal.

Superficial: Near the surface of the body; external.

Proximal: Closer to the point of attachment or origin.

Distal: Farther from the point of attachment or origin.

Ventral (anterior): Toward the front of the body.Dorsal (posterior): Toward the back of the body.

Dorsal (posterior): Toward the back of the body.

Anatomical Positions: These are standardized reference positions used to describe the body:

Erect: Standing upright, facing forward, with arms at the sides and palms facing forward.

Supine: Lying face up.

Recumbent: Lying down (can be prone or supine).

Prone: Lying face down.
