SMCR Model
A foundational model of the communication process consisting of the Sender, Message, Channel, and Receiver.
Feedback
A response or signal that enables a sender to determine if a message was received as intended; it is any information individuals receive about their behavior.
Evaluative Feedback
A form of feedback that provides a judgment, such as 'Excellent', 'Very Good', or 'Good'.
Descriptive Feedback
A form of feedback that provides specific observations or information about performance.
Prescriptive Feedback
A form of feedback that provides instructions or manual-style guidance for future behavior.
Task or Procedural Feedback
Feedback focused on outcomes, such as whether patients were satisfied or if a project was completed on time.
Relational Feedback
Feedback that emphasizes the interpersonal dynamics and how a group gets along.
Individual Feedback
Feedback that focuses specifically on a particular person.
Group Feedback
Feedback that focuses on how well an entire collective or group is performing.
The Johari Window
A framework for opening channels of communication based on building trust through self-disclosure and learning about oneself through feedback from others.
Information Richness
A concept from Daft, R. L., & Lengel, R. H. (1984) describing the capacity of communication channels to convey information and facilitate understanding.
Kinesics
A type of nonverbal communication involving body movements, gestures, and facial expressions.
Proxemics
A type of nonverbal communication related to the use of space and physical distance.
Haptics
A type of nonverbal communication involving touch.
Vocalics
A type of nonverbal communication involving voice characteristics such as tone, pitch, and volume.
Chronemics
A type of nonverbal communication involving the use and perception of time.
Environmental Barriers
Communication obstacles characterized by the organizational setting, including complexity, power relationships, and competition for time.
Personal Barriers
Barriers to communication based on an individual's frame of reference, beliefs, values, selective perception, or lack of empathy.
Strategic Communication
An intentional process of presenting ideas in a clear, concise, and persuasive way, consisting of outcome, context, messages, tactical reinforcement, and feedback.
Corporate Grapevine
An unstructured and informal network founded on social relationships rather than organizational charts, consisting of single strand, gossip, probability, and cluster patterns.
Boundary Spanning
A strategy for communicating with external stakeholders by monitoring the activities of the environment and external entities.
CMS
The Center for Medicare/Medicaid Services, representing a key federal government stakeholder in healthcare communication.
