Airspace
The portion of the atmosphere above a particular land area, especially above a nation
VFR Weather Minimums
minimum flight visibilities and distances from clouds which you must maintain in each airspace class
Controlled Airspace
general term which covers five of the six classes of airspace ; Class A, Class B, Class C, Class D, and Class E. You are subject to certain operating rules, as well as pilot qualification and aircraft equipment requirements.
Uncontrolled Airspace
Airspace that is not subject to certain operating rule and/or aircraft equipment requirements
Class G Airspace
You are not required to communicate with ATC when operating here unless a temporary control tower has been established
Transponder
Electronic device aboard the airplane which enhances your aircraft's identity on an ATC radar screen. An air traffic controller may assign an individual code to your transponder to help distinguish aircraft
Class E Airspace
Controlled airspace with no communication requirements to operate within it, buy you can request traffic advisory services which ATC provides on a workload-permitting basis.
Federal Airways
Bases on VOR or VORTAC navaids and are identified by a V and the airway number
Victor Airways
Same as a Federal Airway. Based on VOR or VORTAC navaids and are identified by a V and the airway number
Class D Airspace
The control tower provides sequencing and traffic advisories to VFR aircraft operating into and out of the airport, and IFR traffic separation.
Class C Airspace
Airspace classification where ATC provides radar service to all IFR and VFR aircraft, and participation in this service is mandatory
Class B Airspace
Airspace that is established to separate all arriving and departing traffic. (usually designed for a major terminal, but serves several airports in the area)
VFR Terminal Area Charts
Chart that helps significantly with orientation and navigation. They show the lateral limits of the various sections of the Class B area on a larger scale (1:250,000) than sectional charts
VFR Flyway Planning Charts
Chart that is published on the reverse side of some VFR terminal area charts
Class A Airspace
Airspace extending from 18,000 feet MSL up to and including FL 600
Special VFR Clearance
A special VFR clearance allows you to operate within the surface areas of Class B, C, D, or E airspace if the visibility is at least 1 statute mile and you can remain clear of clouds
Special Use Airspace
Used to confine certain flight activities and to place limitations on aircraft operations which are not part of these activities.
Alert Area
Areas shown on aeronautical charts to inform you of unusual types of aerial activities such as parachute jumping, glider towing, or high concentrations of student pilot training are designated as...
Military Operations Area (MOA)
A block of airspace in which military training and other military maneuvers are conducted.
Warning Area
Is airspace of defined dimensions, extending from three nautical miles outward from the coast of the United States, that contains activity which may be hazardous to nonparticipating aircraft.
Restricted Area
Often have invisible hazards to aircraft, such as artillery firing, aerial gunnery, or guided missiles.
Prohibited Area
Established for security or other reasons associated with national welfare and contain airspace within the flight of aircraft is prohibited.
Controlled Firing Area
Compared to other special use airspace, is that its activities are discontinued immediately when a spotter aircraft, radar, or ground lookout personnel determines an aircraft might be approaching the area.
National Security Area (NSA)
Area established at locations where there is a requirement for increased security and safety of ground facilities
Other Airspace Areas
Mainly consist of national security areas, airport advisory areas and military training routes
Airport Advisory Area
Extend 10 statute miles from airports where there is a flight service station located on the field and no operating control tower.
Local Airport Advisory Service (LAA)
Includes advisories on wind direction and velocity, favored runway, altimeter setting, and reported traffic within the area.
Military Training Route (MTR)
Established below 10,000 feet MSL for operations at speeds in excess of 250 knots
Temporary Flight Restriction
Restrictions imposed by the FAA to protect persons or property on the surface or in the air from a specified hazard or situation
Parachute Jump Aircraft Area
Area that is tabulated in the airport/facility directory
Terminal Radar Service Area (TRSA)
Areas that does not fit into any of the U.S. airspace classes. By contacting approach control, you can receive radar services within a TRSA, but participation is not mandatory
Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ)
Zone where it is required to identify an aircraft within the vicinity of U.S. international airspace boundaries.
National Defense Airspace
Airspace that prohibits all flight-training activities within 30 miles and create 10 mile radius no-fly zones that normally shut down one or more general aviation airports. Violators are threatened with a pilot certificated, criminal prosecution, and even deadly force for entering the airspace.
Washington DC Special Flight Rules Area (SFRA)
Includes all airspace within a 30 NM radius of the Washington (DCA) VOR up to 18000 feet MSL, and provides increasingly restrictive operating rules as you approach downtown.
Flight Restricted Zone
A highly restricted ring of airspace within 13 to 15 nautical miles of the Washington DC VOR, which is directly, over the nations capital
Visual Warning System (VWS)
When a laser illuminates the aircraft in an alternating red and green signal pattern. This laser can be seen only from the specific aircraft being targeted and that it is not hazardous to the eyes of persons onboard the aircraft.
FAA Special Awareness Training
Certificate that is required to fly within the area of Washington D.C. and in other types of special use airspace.
