What is a prokaryotic cell?
A simple unicellular cell that has NO nucleus (“PRO = NO”)
What is a cell?
The basic unit of life that all living things are made of
What is the cell membrane?
The protective outer barrier of a cell that controls what enters and leaves
What is cytoplasm?
The gel-like material inside the cell that surrounds and supports all organelles
What is the nucleoid?
The non-membrane region in a prokaryotic cell where circular DNA is stored
What are organelles?
Internal structures that allow a cell to live, grow, and reproduce
What is a prokaryote?
A cell without a true nucleus and without membrane-bound structures
What do ribosomes do?
They make proteins for the cell
What are the two categories of cells?
Eukaryotic cells and prokaryotic cells
What are the two types of prokaryotes?
Bacteria and archaea
What is the structure of a prokaryotic cell?
A small, simple cell with circular genetic material and no nucleus
What is the size of a prokaryotic cell?
It ranges from 0.4 to 10 micrometers
Where is DNA found in prokaryotes?
In the nucleoid region and floating freely inside the cell
What is the cell wall?
A stiff outer layer that gives shape and protection
What is the cell capsule?
A sticky outer layer that protects bacteria and helps them stick to surfaces
What are flagella?
Long tail-like structures that help the cell move
What is a plasmid?
Small extra pieces of DNA in bacteria that give special traits
What are pili?
Small hair-like structures that help bacteria stick to each other
What is a mesosome?
A structure attached to the cell membrane that pushes materials out of the cell
