Wave
a disturbance that transfers energy from one point to another without transferring matter
Parts of a Wave
Crest: Highest point
Trough: Lowest point
Rest position: Wave has no amplitude
Wavelength: Distance of 1 cycle
Amplitude: Wave height from rest position to top of crest or bottom of trough. Energy transferred by a wave depends on its amplitude. Measured in meters.
Frequency
The rate of repetition of a wave. The amount of crests that pass a point per second. Symbol is f. Measured in hertz(Hz)
Relationship between frequency and wavelength
When the frequency increases, the wavelength shortens. This is an inverse relatinship.
Relationship between frequency, wavelength, and energy
The frequency increases and the wavelength shortens with the increase in energy.
Radio Waves
Long wavelength, low frequency, low energy
Gamma rays
Short wavelength, high frequency, high energy
