Formula for Potential Energy of a Spring:
PEspring = ½ kx²
where k = spring constant
x = amount of compression
(relative to equilibrium position)
Define Potential Energy
Energy stored in an object due to its position relative to some zero position
Define Elastic Potential Energy
Energy stored in elastic materials (spring, bungee cord, etc.) as a result of strong or compressing
Gravitational Potential Energy
Energy stored as the result of the gravitational attraction of the Earth for the object
Formula for Gravitational Potential Energy
PEgrav = mgh
Equilibrium position of a spring
Position that the spring naturally is at when there is no force applied to it
