Force
A push or pull that one object exerts on another.
Mass
The amount of matter in an object, measured in kilograms.
Weight
The gravitational force exerted on an object, measured in Newtons.
Gravitational Force
The force that pulls objects towards the Earth.
Pressure
The amount of force acting on a unit area, measured in Pascals (Pa).
Contact Force
A force that acts between two objects in physical contact.
Non-contact Force
A force that acts at a distance without physical contact between objects.
Friction
The force that opposes motion between two surfaces in contact.
Free-body Diagram
A diagram showing all the forces acting on a single object.
Gravitational Field Strength
The force of gravity acting on a unit mass, measured in N/kg.
Newton (N)
The SI unit of force; the amount of force required to accelerate a 1 kg mass by 1 m/s².
Tsunami
A series of ocean waves caused by the displacement of a large volume of water.
Earthquake
The shaking of the Earth's surface caused by the release of energy in the Earth's lithosphere.
Volcanic Eruption
The discharge of magma, gas, and ash from a volcano.
Turning Effect of Forces
The rotation of an object about a pivot point as a result of forces applied.
