  • Cognitive neuroscience is the scientific study of how brain structures & neural activity are linked to mental processes (e.g. attention, perception & memory). It examines how neurons communicate through neural networks to produce complex functions & how certain brain structures are associated with specific functions (localisation of function), such as the hippocampus in the formation of new, long-term memories.

  • Cognitive neuroscience also recognises distributed processing, where cognitive functions involve multiple brain regions working together, alongside neural plasticity (the brain’s ability to reorganise & adapt following experience or damage).

  • Researchers use neuroimaging techniques (e.g. fMRI, PET scans & EEG) to measure brain activity & infer links between neural activation & cognitive processes. Overall, cognitive neuroscience has improved our understanding of how cognitive functions are represented in the brain (cognitive mapping) & has contributed to the development of fields, such as artificial intelligence.
