Observation
The act of noticing and describing events or processes in a careful, orderly way
Inference
A logical interpretation based on what scientists already know
Hypothesis
A tentative scientific explanation that can be tested by further observation or by experimentation
Controlled Experiment
An experiment in which only one variable is changed
Independent Variable
The variable that is deliberately changed
Dependent Variable
The variable that is observed and that changes in response to the independent variable
Control Group
Exposed to the same conditions as the experimental group except for changes in the independent variable
Data
What scientists gather while observing their experiments
Theory
A well-tested explanation for a range of phenomena
Bias
A personal rather than scientific, point of view for, or against, something
Biology
The science that employs scientific mythology to study living things
Sexual Reproduction
Cells from two different parents unite to produce the first cell of the new organism
Asexual Reproduction
The new organism has a single parent
