Classification
systematic arrangement of living organisms into categories based on shared characteristics. This process, known as taxonomy, helps scientists organize and identify species, making it easier to study their relationships and evolutionary history. The main taxonomic ranks include domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species.
Ranked classification
a type of classification task in machine learning where the goal is to predict a ranked order of items rather than assigning them to discrete categories.
binomial classification
a system in biology for naming organisms. It was developed by Carl Linnaeus in the 18th century. Each species is given a two-part name.
Genus
a rank in the biological classification (taxonomy) that groups together species that are closely related and share a common ancestor.
Species
basic unit of classification, defined as a group of organisms that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring. It is often identified by a two-part scientific name (binomial nomenclature) consisting of the genus name and species identifier.
