Argument
a claim or thesis that conveys a position or solution developed through a line of reasoning and supported by evidence
Claim
a statement made about an issue that asserts a perspective (position, opinion, point of view, solution…)
Assertion
Categorical statement that generalizes an opinion about human nature
Context
the intent, audience, purpose, bias background of an issue; also includes the importance of an issue or the "so what?"
Evidence
information, data, quotation, excerpt from text used as proof to support a claim or thesis
Line of Reasoning
arrangement of claims and evidence that leads to a conclusion
Commentary
discussion and analysis of evidence in relation to the claim to describe a source's line of reasoning
Assumption
a belief regarded as true and often unstated
Limitation
a boundary or point at which a position is no longer valid or a solution is no longer effective; can also be interpreted as a drawback to a solution
Implication
a possible future effect or result of a solution/position
Authority
evidence gathered from those with an acknowledged expertise in a field
Credibility
the degree to which a source is believable and trustworthy
Validity
the extent to which an argument or claim is logical
Bias
a personal, opinion, belief, or value that may influence one's judgement
Fallacy
evidence or reasoning that is false or in error; use of faulty logic or opinion supported by evidence
Concession
acknowledgment and acceptance of an opposing or different view
Counter Argument
an opposing perspective, idea, theory, solution, or opinion supported by evidence
Peer Review
the evaluation of work by fellow experts in the field of the work; peer reviewed journals/articles are tier-one source, the most credible you can find on a subject
