Protected characteristics
Attributes that are legally protected from discrimination, including age, disability, gender reassignment, sexual orientation, marital status, pregnancy, race, religion, and sex.
Direct discrimination
Occurs when someone is treated less favourably because of a protected characteristic.
Indirect discrimination
Occurs when a policy applies to everyone but disadvantages people with certain protected characteristics.
Prejudice
Negative attitudes or dislikes of individuals or groups, often rooted in misinformation.
Stereotyping
Generalizations made about a particular group, often in an offensive manner.
Labelling
Identifying people as members of a specific group with the assumption they are all the same.
Bullying
Repeated behavior intended to hurt others physically or psychologically.
Discrimination by perception
Discrimination that occurs based on the perceived possession of a protected characteristic.
Discrimination by association
Discrimination that occurs when someone is treated less favorably due to the characteristics of someone they associate with.

Disempowerment
A feeling of having no control or power over one’s own life.
Low self-esteem
A lack of confidence and self-worth, often induced by experiences of discrimination.

A UK law that protects individuals from discrimination based on protected characteristics.

An organization that authored a report discussing fairness and rights in Britain.
