IQ
Stands for intelligence quotient; a score earned on a test designed to measure intelligence.
Standardization
The process of administering a test consistently to a large representative sample to ensure reliability.
Norming
Giving a test to a large population to collect data, providing normative scores for interpretation.
Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale
An intelligence test developed from Binet's work, standardized for different age groups.
Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS)
A comprehensive IQ test that includes various subtests measuring different cognitive skills.
Flynn effect
The observation that each generation has a significantly higher IQ than the last.
Intellectual disability
Previously known as mental retardation; a diagnosis characterized by significant deficits in intellectual and adaptive functioning.
Bell curve
A graph representing a normal distribution of traits, such as intelligence, in the population.
Representative sample
A subset of the population that accurately reflects the larger population's characteristics.
Adaptive functioning
The ability to perform everyday tasks and live independently, which is a consideration in diagnosing intellectual disabilities.
