refers to any data collection method that involves asking people to report their thoughts feelings or behaviour
questionnaire
a structured set of questions designed to gather information from their respondents
advantages of using a questionnaire
questionnaires can be easily repeated so the data can be collected from large numbers of people relatively cheaply and quickly - making the it high in test-retest reliability.
since questionnaires have fixed standardized questions, this ensures that all questions are measuring the same thing therefore making it high in construct validity. It also makes it high in internal reliability as you can repeat the exact same questions
respondents may feel more willing to reveal truthful personal/ confidential information in a questionnaire then an interview due to social desirability and interviewer bias.
disadvantages of using questionnaires
the sample may be biased because only certain kinds of people fill in questionnaires - literate individuals who are willing to spend their time filling them in - this could also leave them to have low response rates (small sample)
