National Verbatim Reporters Association; a professional association of verbatim court reporters and the authority for the voice writing profession.
antitrust laws
Federal and state statutes to protect trade and commerce from unlawful restraints, prior discriminations, price fixing, and monopolies.
bench conference
A conversation held by attorneys with a judge out of the hearing of the jury; also referred to as a sidebar.
certificate page
The last page of a transcript, dated and signed by the court reporter, attesting that the transcript is true and accurate.
certified question
A question extracted from a deposition and transcribed by the reporter to be taken to a judge having jurisdiction for a ruling.
confidentiality
The professional responsibility of a reporter to not disclose testimony to others, extending to scopists, transcribers, and office staff.
errata page
A separate page upon which a deponent is permitted to correct any errors they claim are present in a transcript.
exhibit
Material items of physical evidence introduced to corroborate oral testimony, marked for identification for the record.
Federal Rule 30
A portion of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure defining matters pertinent to the taking of depositions.
impartiality
The professional responsibility of a reporter to be fair and unbiased to each participant and disclose any potential conflict of interest.
litigation support services
Extra services such as instant viewing, ASCII disk, keyword indexing, and condensed transcripts offered to clients.
oath
A form of attestation calling upon God to witness the truth of testimony; termed an affirmation when reference to God is omitted.
parenthetical notation
An expression added to a transcript by the reporter to explain non-verbal situations or movements occurring during proceedings.
protective order
An order issued by a court to permit a party to temporarily hold back certain documents or to protect a person from harassment.
rough draft transcript
An unedited transcript that may contain errors and does not include a title page, appearance page, or certificate page.
voir dire
Examination of prospective jurors for qualifications and lack of prejudice, or examination of an expert witness regarding qualifications.
abeyance
In estate law, a lapse in succession during which there is no person in whom title is vested.
ad damnum
The clause of a writ or declaration containing the statement of damages claimed.
ad hoc
For only the particular case at hand.
ad litem
For the purposes of the suit.
amicus curiae
Friend of the court; one who volunteers information on matters of law with the court's permission.
asportation
A carrying away; the felonious removal of goods.
Bates stamp
A number stamped on each page of exhibits in preparation of a case for trial.
certiorari
An appellate review proceeding examining the action of an inferior court; a writ of review or inquiry.
chattel real
An item of personal property so affixed to real estate as to be considered a part thereof; a fixture.
corpus delicti
The body of the crime; the physical object upon which the crime was committed.
de novo
Anew; starting over as though not done before.
dictum
A statement in a court decision of a rule or principle of law not essential to the determination of the issues but used to explain reasoning.
ex parte
By or for one person; not adversary.
in camera
In chambers; in the judge's private office.
nunc pro tunc
Entered at a time subsequent with retroactive effect.
stare decisis
The rule of precedent; the principle that what is decided once will be applied in the future.
sui juris
Of one's own right.
ultra vires
Outside of the scope of authority to act.
acetabulum
The socket in the pelvis within which the head of the femur fits.
bruit
A sound or murmur heard in auscultation, especially an abnormal one.
ecchymosis
A small hemorrhagic spot on the skin, larger than a petechia.
nystagmus
Involuntary, rapid movement of the eyeball.
spondylolisthesis
Forward displacement of lumbar vertebra(e).
objecvity
Expressing or dealing with facts without distortion by personal feelings, prejudices, or interpretations.
EUO
Examination Under Oath; a proceeding conducted by a party, such as an insurance representative, similar to a deposition.
deposion on writen quesons
A proceeding where the court reporter reads questions furnished by an attorney and transcribes the answers.
