What should the therapy focus on?

Focus on our interpretation of events/ situations as opposed to focusing on the events/situations themselves. ABC model helps to explain the interactions between how we think, feel and act

How is REBT used as a treatment

Ellis believes if a person has constant negative beliefs about life events they are likely to suffer from depression

Goal of therapy is to identify the negative thoughts and replace them with more rational and constructive thoughts. The patient will practice developing more helpful thoughts about life experiences between sessions and the depressive symptoms will go away

Musturbation- def

People;le who place the following sorts of demands upon themselves and others often find themselves disappointed:

  1. Ppl must approve of everything i do

  2. Other ppl must treat me well

  3. I must get what i want and not what i do not want

Process of REBT/ how to works

REBT: focus on the present and not the past. Actively challenge self- defeating thoughts.

Work with clients to help them reduce NEGATIVE EMOTIONS + BEHAVIOURS through targeting unhelpful beliefs.

Help clients identify whether any of the 3 basic musts r affecting their happiness and day to day functioning.

Lyon and WOODS

Meta-analysis of 70 REBT outcome studies

Total of 236 comparisons of REBT to baseline + control groups are examined.

RESULTS: individuals receiving REBT demonstrated significant improvement over baseline measures and control groups.

Recent research: REBT + antidepressants r equally effective

New cards

Disputing- how it works

Therapist will dispute persons thoughts by asking them to provide evidence for why everything must be as their beliefs demand.

They will explore the answer till person realises that their believes are irrational

Person will develop new alternative way of thinking abt their lives

13
New cards

End point for REBT

Clients accept themselves, other ppl and their life including all the good and bad points

14
New cards

Strengths

As effective as antidepressants for young ppl.

Study- Romanian teens (11-17) compared to each other: REBT, SSRI, REBT + SSRI for 3 years. All groups showed increase in serotonin and noradrenaline and a decrease in -VE AUTOMATIC THOUGHTS and depressive symptoms. Shows that REBT is as effective as drug treatments + an alternative

Weaknesses

Supporting studies have been shown to be flawed.

Meta- analysis of 70 LONGITUDINAL STUDIES OF REBT- as effective as other forms of therapy but there was PPT ATTRITION- affects extent to which findings can be generalised

Less effective for those who attended fewer sessions
