What happened in March of 2013 that made people start to think more about what “good” conditions of confinement are?

Tom Clements was murdered at his own home by Evan Spencer Ebel, who had served 8 years in prison mostly in solitary confinement and was angry about the system.

Solitary confinement

Used to isolate human contact and is intended as an additional punishment, but may also be used for protective custody or suicide watch

What causes violence in prisons

Overuse of solitary confinement, mistreatment of prisoners by officials, minimal education/ rehabilitation opportunities, and overworked staff
