partial denture
a prosthesis that replaces one or more, but not all of the natural teeth and supporting structures. it is supported by the teeth or mucosa. it may be fixed or removable
removable partial denture
A partial denture that can be removed and replaced in the mouth by the patient.
interim denture
A denture used for a short interval of time to provide:
esthetics, mastication, occlusal support and convenience.
conditioning of the patient to accept the final prosthesis.
retention
Resistance to removal from the tissues or teeth
stability
Resistance to movement in a horizontal direction (anterior-posteriorly or medio-laterally)
support
Resistance to movement towards the tissues or teeth
upward
Direction of support in maxillary RPD
downward
Direction of support in mandibular RPD
downward
Direction of retention in maxillary RPD
upward
Direction of retention in mandibular RPD
abutment
A tooth that supports a partial denture.
retainer
A component of a partial denture that provides both retention and support for the partial denture
tooth supported partial dentures inadequate interarch space
indications of metal base
tooth tissue supported edentulous space (class i and ii), tooth supported edentulous space where bone resorption is expected
contraindications of metal base
accuracy and performance of form, comparative tissue response, thermal conductivity
advantages of metal base
esthetics, enhancement of retention not possible, difficulty of relining or rebasing, increased weight for a maxillary denture, good thermal conductor
disadvantages of metal base
resin base
type of rpd
the plastic denture base has plastic in contact with the edentulous ridge. it is used more frequently than the metal base
metal base
type of rpd
the metallic portion of the denture base forming a part or all of the basal surface of the denture
tooth tissue supported edentulous spaces, tooth supported edentulous spaces where bone resorption will necessitate a reline/rebase, where considerable missing alveolar tissue must be replaced
indications of resin base
single tooth edentulous spaces, where protrusive or lateral occlusal guidance will be on the prosthetic teeth
contraindications of resin base
esthetics, easy to repair
advantages of resin base
more porous than metal, easily damaged by abrasion or fractures, poor thermal conductibility, has the potential to be dimensionally unstable
disadvantages of resin base
unilateral rpd, bilateral rpd
classification of rpd according to location
unilateral rpd
classification of rpd according to location
replace missing tooth or teeth in one side of the arch only (except for incisive class ii kennedy’s classification)
bilateral rpd
classification of rpd according to location
replace missing tooth or teeth on both side of the dental arch
metal framework
is a part of the components of RPD. It is made up of either Gold (75% gold by weight) or Chrome Cobalt Alloys (30% Chromium and 70% Cobalt)
gold 75%, chrome cobalt alloys 30-70%
metal framework is made up of either — or —
mandibular class iii or iv rpd’s, maxillary class i-iv rpd’s as well as all modification areas
metal framework can be used in —
mandibular class i or ii rpd’s since it cannot be relined
metal framework cannot be used in —
small plastic beads
the acrylic material associated with the base in metal framework is attached using — at the time of base wax up
provisional denture
types of rpd
It is a term used to designate temporary prosthesis made as an interim measure to help the patient become accustomed to an artificial replacement. same as temporary denture
temporary denture
types of rpd
prosthesis used to provide patient with a tideover cosmetic facade until missing anterior teeth can be restored with a more definitive type of replacement
interim denture
types of rpd
It is a dental prosthesis used for a short time for reasons of esthetics, mastication, occlusal support, or convenience, or for conditioning the patient to accept an artificial substitute for missing natural teeth until a more definite prosthetic dental treatment can be provided.
transitional denture
types of rpd
Prosthesis that serve as temporary denture to which teeth will be added as more teeth are lost and that will be replaced after post-extraction tissue changes have occurred. It can become an interim denture when all teeth have been removed from the dental arches.
treatment denture
types of rpd
Dental prosthesis used for treating or conditioning tissues that are called on to support and retain denture base.
butterfly partial denture
types of rpd
A synonym for prosthesis that is usually temporary, claspless, and made of acrylic resin, and that replaces anterior and posterior teeth.
more esthetic, more dense surface which is hard, abrasive, resistant, less prone to stains and easier to clean
porcelain denture teeth porcelain denture teeth have the following advantages in comparison to plastic denture teeth:
minor connector
components of rpd
unites the major connector with other parts of the denture
to transfer functional stress to the abutment teeth, to transfer the effect of the retainers, rests and stabilizing components to the rest of the denture
functions of minor connector
retainers
components of rpd
it is any form of attachment applied directly to an abutment tooth used for fixation and retention of the prosthesis
direct retainers
types of retainers
a clasp or attachment to an abutment tooth for the purpose of retaining RPD in place and limits the displacement of the RPD in an occlusal direction
extracoronal direct retainers
two types of direct retainer
clasps
intracoronal direct retainer
two types of direct retainer
precision and semi-precision attachment
indirect retainers
types of retainers
any part of RPD framework which assist the Direct retainer in preventing displacement of an extension base by functioning through lever action on the opposite side of the Fulcrum Line
It limits the movement of a denture base away from the tissue
Prevents the rocking or see-saw movement of the free end denture cases
Restore the esthetic, phonetic and masticatory functions of the missing natural teeth, Transmit forces to the denture bases through which they may be distributed by the prosthesis to all teeth and tissues contacted by rigid parts of the denture, Maintain the integrity of the arch by supplying missing proximal contacts, Maintain the position of opposing teeth by supplying missing incisal and occlusal contacts
The functions of prosthetic teeth are to:
auxiliary occlusal rest, embrasure hook, major connects
Components that act as Indirect Retainers
rest
is a component placed on the abutment tooth in a prepared rest seat, so as to limit the movement of the denture in a gingival direction.
occlusal rest, incisal rest, cingulum or lingual rest
types of rest
proximal plate
It is a plate of metal in contact with the proximal surface of an abutment tooth to prevent the migration of teeth towards the edentulous area.
tissue stop
It is a metal projection arising below the mesh that contacts the underlying ridge to prevent the mesh from touching the cast during packing of resin. It is usually seen on distal extension cases.
finish line
It is a step-like preparation located on the edentulous space and serve as demarcation or junction between the metal and the acrylic portion to prevent feather edging of the resin material.
internal finish line, external finish line
types of finish line
major connectors, minor connector, retainers, clasps, proximal plate, tissue stop, denture base retaining element, metal slits
parts of metal framework
circumferential clasps, bar clasps
types of clasps
mesh, lattice, retentive pin
types of denture base retaining element
denture base
A — is that part of a denture which rests on the foundation areas and to which teeth are attached
denture base
is a supporting base for artificial teeth
denture base
some of the occlusal force distributed from artificially teeth is transferred to the edentulous ridge directly through the —
