Positive Reinforcement
A process where a behavior is followed by a reinforcing stimulus that increases the frequency of that behavior.
Immediacy
The importance of delivering a reinforcer immediately after the behavior occurs, ideally within 5 seconds.
Discriminative Stimuli (SD)
Stimuli that evoke responses due to the reinforcement history associated with them.
Negative Reinforcement
A process whereby a behavior is strengthened by removing or avoiding an aversive stimulus.
Automaticity of Reinforcement
The concept that reinforcement can be effective without the learner's awareness.
Magnitude of Reinforcer
The size or significance of the reinforcer, which should be sufficient to motivate the learner.
Response Prompts
Support provided to help initiate a desired behavior, which should also be reinforced.
Continuous Schedule of Reinforcement
A reinforcement schedule where every occurrence of the target behavior is reinforced.
Contingent Attention
Providing praise or attention immediately following a desired behavior to reinforce it.
Reinforcer Assessments
Evaluations conducted to determine what high-quality and preferred reinforcers work for learners.
Response-Reinforcement Delay
The time between the occurrence of the desired behavior and the delivery of reinforcement.
Natural Reinforcers
Reinforcers that occur naturally in the environment as opposed to being contrived.
Abolishing Operations
Events that decrease the reinforcing effectiveness of a stimulus.
Escape Response
A behavior that allows the learner to avoid or terminate an aversive stimulus.
Behavioral Control
The influence we have over a learner's behavior through reinforcement and antecedent stimuli.
Criterion for Reinforcement
The level of achievement needed by the learner to access reinforcement, which should be easy to achieve at first.
