Tidal Volume (TV or VT)
normal range of volume as you take normal breaths
Inspiratory Reserve Volume (IRV)
maximum range of volume of air you can inhale IN ADDITION to the normal volume you inhale
Expiratory Reserve Volume (ERV)
maximum range of volume of air you can exhale IN ADDITION to the volume you normally exhale
Residual Volume (RV)
volume of air that never leaves your lungs
Obstructive
rate at which air can move into/out of lungs is reduced
Restrictive
ability of the lungs to expand is compromised and full proper volume cannot be achieved
FEV1
maximum volume of air a person can exhale in one second
FEV1/VC Ratio
the ratio should be about 80%
Vital Capacity (VC)
amount of air that lungs can expel after having been filled completely
Inspiratory Capacity (IC)
total volume of air that can be inhaled into the lungs after a normal expiration
Functional Residual Capacity (FRC)
volume of gas in lungs at the end of expiration
Total Lung Capacity (TLC)
total volume of air that can be contained in the lungs
