Embroidery
like painting with a needle and thread. It is the application of stitches to fabric in order to create a decoration.
- it is the ornamentation of textiles.
- derived from the old French "embroiders" meaning 'edge & 'border'
- was introduced into the Orient by the Netherlanders in the 15th century. It was then introduced to Filipinos by the Spaniards. The first to practice embroidery are nuns.
- it reached its highest development during the middle ages.
Gauge
used to measure short distances.
Tape Measure
used for measuring more than one-foot.
Thimble
protects the middle finger while also pushing the needle while doing embroidery work. (6-12 sizes)
Embroidery Hoop/Stiletto
makes eyelets in the fabric, also keeps it stretched.
Embroidery Scissors
small, sharp, and pointed. Used for trimming scallops, threads, and cutting large eyelets.
Needle Threader
used for easier threading.
Pounce
fine powder used for transferring designs.
Crewel
1-10, sharp pointed, medium length, large eye.
Chenille
13-26, sharp, thicker, longer, and has larger eyes.
Tapestry
also 13-26, unlike chenille, it is blunt.
Water Colo Brush
transfers design (pricking & pouncing method.)
Pin Cushion
holds pins & needles.
Tracing Paper
traces designs.
Sewing Box
keeps all embroidery tools together.
Fabric
sometimes referred to as cloth.
Common Weave
tightly woven, smooth surface, best used for articles w/ decorative stitches.
Even Weave
intended for hardanger embroidery.
Basket Weave
used by beginners & ramie linen.
Thread
differ in terms of texture, fiber, content, number of strands, & color.
